EFFECT OF A NON-DIABETOGENIC SULFHYDRYL INHIBITOR ON THE GLUTATHIONE CONTENT OF PANCREATIC ISLET TISSUE

Abstract
The potent sulfhydryl (SH) inhibitor iodoacetic acid (IAA) has previously been found to be non-diabetogenic in the marine teleost Cottus scorpius (the daddy sculp in). It was administered as a single intramuscular injection at approximately the L. D. 50 and also at a sublethal dose. The glutathione (GSH) content in the isolated islet tissue was significantly lowered to approximately the same extent with both doses. The GSH decrease differed from that obtained after administration of the diabetogenic SH inhibitor alloxan. It appeared later and lasted longer. Moreover, there was no clear difference between the GSH lowering effect of IAA on the isolated islet tissue and of that on some organs such as the myo- cardium not believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus.This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
