Abstract
An attempt was made to assess the value of Buscopan in routine gastrointestinal radiology. It was indicated in 55 out of 1,163 examinations of the upper gastrointestinal tract, 45 out of 247 barium enema examinations and in 2 out of 14 T-tube choledochograms. It was considered a safe and effective spasmolytic and most helpful in assessing achalasia of the cardia, acute peptic ulceration near the pylorus and both functional and organic disorders in the large bowel. It was disappointing as a diagnostic aid in chronic peptic ulceration and neoplastic disease of the stomach. Its greatest value lay in helping to distinguish between functional and organic conditions in the colon and in assessing organic pathology in the distal colon more adequately.
