Subgroup Influence in Decision-Making Groups

Abstract
The consistency of subgroup members has shown promise as a predictor of subgroup influence in previous studies. Yet past research typically has not focused on the interactive properties of this variable. This study extends these prior investigations by examining consistency from a communication perspective. A definition of consistency as a communication-based variable is proposed, 16 decision-making group discussions are coded based on that definition, and predictions forfinal group outcomes are made. Findings reveal that (a) consistentpromotion of a given position by the subgroup and consistent agreement among fellow subgroup members are particularly influential in affecting group outcomes, and (b) subgroups have the greatest chance of affecting group outcomes when they maintain consistent communication throughout the discussion.
