PARAHYDROXYPROPIOPHENONE EFFECTS ON RAT THYROID, ADRENAL, AND PITUITARY*

Abstract
Admn. of 2% parahydroxypropiophenone (PHP) to the diet of immature female Wistar rats caused decreases in growth and adrenal wt. and increases in thyroid wt. comparable to the effects of 0.5% propylthiouracil. Combination of PHP and propylthiouracil did not potentiate the effects. Histologically similar effects were also seen, i.e. thyroid hyperplasia, adrenal cortical decrease without medullary changes and the appearance of "thyroidectomy" changes in the pituitary.
