Abstract
The alloy transfer matrix approximation for a one-dimensional system with off-diagonal disorder is discussed. A general method for determining dispersion relations within this approximation is proposed and shown to lead to reasonable results for the asymptotic decay lengths of states. However, a calculation of the conductivity shows that all states within the band are extended, revealing a basic shortcoming of the approximation. Keywords
