Inclusive production of hadrons at highPTin 200 and 300 GeVπ−pandπ−-nucleus collisions

Measurements of the production cross sections at large values of transverse momentum ($P_T$) for ${\pi }^{\pm }$, $K^{\pm }$, $p$, and $\overline{p}$ in 200 and 300 GeV ${\pi }^{-}p$ collisions are presented. The dependences of the cross section on $P_T$ and the transverse scaling variable $x_T=\frac{2P_T}{\sqrt{s}}$ are discussed. The ratios of production of different particle types, such as $\frac{{\pi }^{-}}{{\pi }^{+}}$, $\frac{K^{+}}{{\pi }^{+}}$, etc., are given, and are shown to be quite different from those in $\mathrm{pp}$ collisions. Data have been taken at three laboratory angles; the angular dependence is given and compared with theoretical models. Data on three nuclear targets allow an evaluation of the atomic-weight ($A$) dependence.
