Abstract
When 50S subunits were added to 30S subunits, the binding capacity of the mixture for specific aminoacyl sRNA was found to be approximately twice the binding capacity of the original 30S subunit preparation. The 50S subunit alone did not bind specific aminoacyl sRNA. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that one molecule of sRNA can bind to the 30S subunit and that the second binding site is generated by the formation of 70S ribosomes. Free (deacylated) specific sRNA also binds to the 30S subunit. Tetracycline inhibits the binding of phenylalanyl sRNA to the 30S subunits-poly U complex.
