Hydrogen peroxide formation in oxidations catalysed by plant α-hydroxyacid oxidase

Abstract
H2O2 is produced during the oxidation of lactate, glycollate and glyoxylate catalysed by plant alpha-hydroxyacid oxidase. This was shown by the effect of catalase on the O2 uptake. The oxidation products depend on the amt. of catalase present. In the absence of catalase, the enzyme-catalysed reactions are followed by non-enzymic reactions between H2O2 and pyruvate or glyoxylate, with the formation of acetate or formate, respectively. It is suggested that oxalate is the product of the enzyme-catalysed oxidation of glyoxylate.Keywords
