Abstract
The paper surveys the influence of information technology upon temperature measurement and control systems. To bring order to the wide range of possibilities, a functional reticulation or classification of information machines is given. This helps in gaining a deep understanding of the role and impact of electronics and computers upon thermal systems in terms of the practical improvements they have allowed. Important features included in commercially available instruments are described. Future trends in the application of artificial intelligence and knowledge expertise in thermal sensors and controllers as well as in thermal system design are highlighted. Keywords
