Abstract
The absorption rates of subcutaneously implanted pellets of testosterone propionate are reported. The pellets were machine made under sterile conditions, and each weighed approx. 200 mg. In the 1st wk. or two the rate of absorption was rapid, and presumably the rate was greatly slowed after capsule formation. After the 1st 2 wks. a remarkably steady absorption rate was found, the avg. amt. absorbed per day falling slowly and steadily until the pellets were very small. Thus, for the first 200 days, the pellets each lost 0.6 to 0.75 mg. per day. In some patients, presumably those whose daily requirement was small, the implantation of 5 pellets proved adequate for more than a yr. In others implantation of a similar dose proved effective for only 3 or 4 mos. The authors concluded that adm. of testosterone propionate by implantation of compressed pellets is effective, satisfactory to the patient, and the most economical method as far as the drug is concerned. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
