Abstract
Growth of A. boydii is proportional to the amount of biotin in the medium. With an adequate supply of biotin maximum growth occurs after 10 days at 27[degree]C at pH4 to 5. None of the vitamins of the B complex is able to substitute for biotin in the growth of this mold. Nicotinic acid stimulated growth and pyridoxine depressed growth in the presence of biotin and the depressive effect of pyridoxine was neutralized by the stimulatory effect of nicotinic acid. Cysteine, glutathione, pimelic acid and DL-aspartic acid are not effective in promoting growth and do not interfere when associated with biotin. Neither oleic acid nor sorbitan monooleate showed any growth-stimulating effect, either alone or in combination with biotin. Two biotin analogs (DL-O-heterobiotin and DL-desthiobiotin) can partially replace biotin. Keywords
