Abstract
Visualization of active glomeruli is possible in the kidney of the 4-5 g mouse, using the quartz rod technique and a combination of oblique illumination and transillumination. At this age the maximal number of glomeruli are at or near the capsular surface. As growth occurs these glomeruli are buried deeper in the , parenchyma by overgrowth of the tubules and hence are inacessible to this technique. The glomeruli were observed in 50% of the animals attempted. They ranged in size from 29 to 53[mu] and individual glomeruli were observed for periods as long as 1.5 hours. Prior to the onset of intravascular agglutination capillary intermittence occurs but total glomerular intermittence does not. Following the appearance of intravascular agglutination total glomerular intermittence occurs. Rarely, total glomerular intermittence precedes the onset of intravascular agglutination.
