Abstract
Four groups of rats pregnant 17-20 days were studied: fed, fasted 17 hours, fasted 40 hours, and 23 hours after pancreatectomy. Blood levels of ketone bodies, glucose, and fats in pregnant rats were altered by fasting and by pancreatectomy. Concentration of ketones and glucose in fetal blood changed with maternal level, whereas lipids were independent of maternal level. Ketone bodies appear to cross the placenta as rapidly as glucose. Keywords
