Abstract
Originally considered rare and usually fatal, congenital CMV infection is now believed to be one of the most common of intrauterine infections, and it has been learned that infants symptomatic at birth have a strong chance of having some neurologic sequelae. The virus has also been implicated in several poorly defined acquired illnesses, such as a type of mononucleosis and ulcerative lesions of the GI tract.
