Effect of Adrenal Cortical Extract on the Blood Picture and Serum Proteins of Fowl

Abstract
White Leghorn and New Hampshire Red fowl were injd. (subcut.) with aqueous adrenal cortical extracts (ACE),, White Leghorn laying hens showed leucopenia, absolute and relative increases in granulo-cytes and lymphocytes. Effects were maximal at 3 hrs. after injn. and the blood picture was normal after 24 hrs. New Hampshire non-laying pullets injd. with ACE showed similar changes with exception of leucopenia which was masked by increase in polymorphonuclears. The alterations are statistically significant. The effects of saline injns., 24-hr. fasting period, and saline plus fasting, are negligible. The 2 breeds of fowl showed quantitative differences in their reactions to ACE. ACE treatment produced no statistically significant change in total serum protein or serum globulin levels, although a trend in the direction of increase is indicated for the majority of injd. birds showing lymphopenia.
