Renal excretion of bilirubin by the rat

Abstract
The renal excretion of bilirubin was studied in rats with ligated bile ducts. Compounds which compete with conjugated bilirubin for protein binding (e.g., sulfisoxazole, sodium salicylate, and sodium taurocholate) increase the urinary excretion of the pigment. Probenecid and sodium p-aminohippurate also increase bile pigment excretion so that it is unlikely that tubular secretion is an important factor. Glomerular filtration of a small dialyzable fraction of the plasma conjugated bilirubin appears to be the main mechanism involved.
