Abstract
The development of order on the surface of the liquid crystal 5 CB as the temperature is lowered to approach the isotropic-nematic phase temperature T c is strikingly shown by measurement of the surface ellipticity. The total excess surface order varies as In (T–Tc) which is consistent with expectations based upon the simple Landau free energy-gradient term model.Keywords
