Studies with the Agar Cup-Plate Method

Abstract
Metaphen, merthiolate, HgCl2 and mercurochrome were tested for antiseptic activity at various dilutions in broth and agar in the presence of varying amts. of blood. Agar exerted little or no effect on the antiseptic properties of Hg compounds. The effectiveness of the Hg compounds varied with the dilution of the antiseptic and the blood content of the medium according to the general formula, y = Kxn, (y, antiseptic dilution; x, blood conc. at which y is bactericidal; K and n, constants for each antiseptic). At certain critical blood and antiseptic levels, the compounds studied had no antiseptic properties. A graph shows that the antiseptic potency was not directly related to the Hg content of the compounds.
