Abstract
Glycogen SynthesisSince glycogen is the polymeric end product of the energy-requiring assembly of hexoses, just as fats and proteins are the end products of acetate and amino acid assemblies, glycogen synthesis should be similarly affected by thyroid hormones — that is, both increased and decreased synthesis should be observed, as predicted from Table 1. Most of the available evidence indicates decreased synthesis of glycogen in thyrotoxicosis. The glycogen contents of liver and muscle, especially the metabolically active forms of glycogen,146 are markedly diminished in hyperthyroid subjects.140 141 142 143 144 145 146 Glycogen synthesis is decreased in human thyrotoxicosis140 and in the muscles of hyperthyroid . . .
