Abstract
Methods were devised for freeing culture media of traces of Fe by chelation with 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine), followed by extraction with chloroform. Brucella suis requires at least 0.030 parts of iron per million parts of medium for max. growth. Fe-deficient B. suis fails to dissociate to the degree observed under Fe-normal conditions. Alanine accumulation is reduced markedly during Fe deficiency. Animal inoculation studies with Fe-deficient, almost catalase-free, B. suis reveal a tendency to greater invasiveness, more rapid multiplication, a more slowly developing inflammatory response of the mononuclear type, and degradation of the granulocytes which infiltrate the site of infection.Keywords
