Abstract
The collapse of federal funding for criminal justice programs at the outset of the 1980s created serious problems for criminal justice education. Enrollment in many programs shrank significantly, while other programs were terminated. Despite the recurrence of some of the conditions that led to federal support for criminal justice education, it is unlikely that such support will become an important influence again. In view of these conditions, this paper considers two potential avenues for enhancement of the continuing development of criminal justice education in the four-year liberal arts context: legitimation of the discipline and enhancement of service to the general educational objectives of the liberal arts university.
