Abstract
The reserpine effect on thyroid function was observed in 18 male chronically ill patients receiving the medication at a level commonly used for reduction of blood pressure. Thyroid function was evaluated in terms of total cholesterol, 24-hour thyroidal radioiodine uptake, 24 radio-iodine urinary excretion, protein bound I and 24 hour thyroxine synthesis. There was no significant change in any of these criteria after 3 weeks of therapy. There was an apparent interference in the epinephrine initiated Thorn test. Very high levels of reserpine in rats produced an effect on the thyroid function tests that was interpreted to be due to the hypotensive shock and the resultant interference with renal excretion of I.Keywords
