Abstract
A comparative study of the utilization of carbohydrates in the presence of glutamate-N was done with M. avium (14 strains), Group-III nonphotochromogens (45 strains), Group-n scotochromogens (22 strains) and M. terrae (40 strains). Growth while utilizing 10 carbohydrates[long dash]glucose, fructose, sucrose, acetate, citrate, succinate, malate, pyruvate, malonate, and fumarate[long dash]was tested. The M. avium was differentiated from the nonphotochromogens and from the scotochromogens by the pattern of utilization of the carbohydrates. At least 3 types were differentiated in the nonphotochromogens. The scotochromogens belonged to 1 type or its variety.
