Abstract
Quartered adrenal glands from normal rats and from rats with adrenal regeneration hypertension were incubated with the substrate pair 1,2-3H-deoxy-corticosterone and 4-14C-progesterone. The radioactive products were characterized by chromatography, derivative formation and isotope dilution. Slightly greater consumption of both substrates occurred in the regenerated, compared to the normal tissue. Regenerated adrenals converted 1.9 times as much progesterone and 1.6 times as much deoxycorticosterone to 18-hydroxy-11-deoxycor-ticosterone (18-OH-DOC) as did normal glands; the conversion to corticosterone was somewhat increased and that to 11-dehydrocorti-costerone increased 3- to 4-fold. In contrast, the conversion to 18-hydroxycorticosterone was greatly diminished and that to a compound tentatively characterized as aldosterone with normal tissue, absent. Based on these results and previous work on the activity of 18-OH-DOC, the hypothesis is proposed that 18-OH-DOC may play a role in eliciting adrenal regeneration hypertension. This publication has 12 references indexed in Scilit:
