Abstract
The fitted crystal-field parameters for lanthanide atoms in metals are shown to be consistent with the usual assumption that the crystal field is a one-electron interaction. Also, the relationship between crystal-field parameters for different host crystals can be understood in terms of the superposition model. Some consequences of these results in relation to ab initio calculations are discussed. Keywords
