Polychlorinated biphenyls analysis in sediments from Castile and Leon reservoirs

Abstract
Sediments from 27 reservoirs in Castile and León (Spain) were analyzed for six PCBs (IUPAC Nos. 28, 52, 101, 153, 138 and 180) by reflux extraction into n‐hexane, which yielded recoveries of 95–100%. The analytes were determined by gas chromatography in a capillary column using an electron capture detector (ECD). The determination limits achieved were of the order of 0.1 ppb. The PCB contents were found to vary from compound to another (No. 153 occurred at the highest concentrations) and with the location of the reservoir, which enabled classification into three broad categories.
