Abstract
The effect of temperature-dependent electronic energy levels on thermodynamic quantities such as the Seebeck coefficient has been approached in two ways. Emin (1977, 1984), noting that the temperature dependence of the energy levels arises from the electron-lattice coupling, studies the thermodynamics of the coupled system. Butcher and Friedman (1977) and Butcher (1984) treat only the electronic system but with energy levels which are explicitly temperature dependent. The difference in the results is attributed to Butcher's failure to include the effect of an electronic carrier on the atomic vibrations. Keywords
