Abstract
Methodological possibilities of quantifying the visual field course in retrobulbar neuritis were studied. In 9 patients the visual field was examined repeatedly using the Octopus computer perimeter. Total loss of sensitivity and the number of test points which indicated pathology were correlated with the recovery of visual function. These parameters, as well as visual acuity, were compared with the cumulative effect of steroid dose. Rapid recovery of visual function brought about by steroid therapy, may have a spontaneous effect on further improvement in central visual field sensitivity. A controlled clinical trial is needed to determine the usefulness of steroid therapy in retrobulbar neuritis.
