Abstract
During the 1st 12 hours of normal liver regeneration, the cytoplasm of almost all cells was found to become highly vacuolated. During this vacuolation, glycogen and the alpha cytomembrane elements of the endo-plasmic reticulum were lost, and, at the same time, lipid inclusions and microbodies became more common. At about 16 hours after partial hepatectomy, large quantities of new alpha cytomembranes were formed, and this was followed, 5 or 6 hours later, by the production of new glycogen. As the cells entered mitosis 24 to 30 hours after operation, their cytoplasm once more became highly vacuolated and alpha cytomembranes and glycogen were again lost.
