The estimation of inositol in animal tissues

Abstract
A chemical method is described for the estimation of inositol in animal tissues. This possesses advantages over earlier methods in that the time taken for an estimation is considerably reduced, the method of extraction of inositol from the tissues improved, the tedious precipitation procedures replaced by treatment with ion exchange materials, and the inositol finally estimated in soln. by reaction with HIO4 without isolation of the inositol. Both free and total water-soluble inositol were detd. in the kidney, heart, liver, brain and skeletal muscle of control rats, and of rats receiving a daily supplement of 5 mg. inositol. No appreciable difference was found between the total water-soluble inositol contents of the tissues in the 2 groups of rats.
