Abstract
The effect of tissue electrolyte composition on PAH transport has been examined in rabbit kidney slices. PAH transport is maximal only when the tissue K and Na are close to normal values. The replacement of chloride in the incubation medium by various other anions inhibits transport to a variable degree, the degree of inhibition apparently being related to the Hofmeister lyotropic series. The dual role of acetate in augmenting PAH transport is discussed. With optimal conditions, the activity of the transport system can be maintained intact in kidney slices for at least 5 hrs. at room temp. Keywords
