Abstract
The adiabatic treatment of the deuteron breakup effect is examined by comparing the calculated breakup cross sections and the partial-wave amplitudes for elastic scattering with those of the more accurate coupled-channel or variational calculations. The three-body scattering system used in the coupled-channel calculation by Austern et al. is employed as an example. It is shown that the adiabatic approximation for the -wave breakup effect is acceptable event at MeV and becomes quite good for MeV.
