Abstract
Respiratory alkalosis from acute voluntary hyperventilation in normal man causes a fall in plasma P concentration from a mean of 0.96 to 0.29 mmole/liter at pH 7.65. Urinary P excretion falls to 0.2 mmole/minute. Acute metabolic alkalosis from NaHCO3 causes a consistent fall from a mean of 1.10 to 0.82 mmole per liter at pH 7.59. The P does not enter erythrocytes and is not associated with a fall in blood glucose or an equivalent fall in plasma Ca. Changes of total CO2 and CO2 tension in opposite directions do not obliterate the response. In use of serum P and renal P excretion in diagnosis of disease or physiological studies, pH of the body fluids should be known. Keywords
