Abstract
Blood reduced glutathione concentration is significantly diminished 5-10 hours after such psychological stresses as jumping from a 34-foot tower while in parachute harness, parachute jumping, and participation in military night-infiltration exercises, but not severe physical activity. The exact nature of the psychological stress evoking this metabolic response is unknown. Such stresses, however, operating over long periods may be capable of producing irreversible depression of the blood glutathione level. The disappearance of reduced glutathione is accompanied by an increase in the oxidized moiety following the plane jump only. On the other occasions, a reduction in the total glutathione concentration occurs.
