THE NUMBER OF CIRCULATING EOSINOPHIL LEUCOCYTES AS AN INDICATION OF THE ADRENAL FUNCTION IN THYROTOXICOSIS

Abstract
As an increase in the secretion of steroids causes a decrease in the number of circulating eosinophils, the authors investigated 33 patients with thyrotoxicosis in order to study adrenal cortical activity. The eosinophil count was below 50/mm3 in 16 patients in the acute stage. After 2 weeks of treatment, the mean eosinophil value for the group was 278/mm3 but for the I131-treated cases which had only 101/mm3. When the patients became euthyroid, the values of the eosinophils were within normal limits with a mean of 188/mm3. The authors discussed the possibility that the changes in the eosinophil count in thyrotoxicosis during treatment may reflect adrenal activity changes.
