Abstract
The characteristic value problem with two unequal minima in the potential field has been solved by the approximate method of Wentzel, Kramers and Brillouin. The result is applied to the calculation of the quantum defects of the states of heavy atoms and explains the fact that these quantum defects are all very close to unity
