A Comparative Survey of the Nutrition and Physiology of Mesophilic Species in the Genus Bacillus

Abstract
Of 296 strains (some freshly isolated and others from type cultures) examined, 245 agreed with the claim of Smith et al. (1946), 32 were intermediate, 8 were not allocated, and 11 strains appeared to belong to a new species (not named). The diagnostic characters of the genus are stated. An unexpected uniformity in nutritional patterns with few aberrant strains was found, and characteristic patterns are given for some 21 spp. and vars. and intermediates, B. pasteurii being the most heterogeneous. The nutrients used were ammonia, amino acids, thiamine, biotin, and nicotinic acid.
