Abstract
The de Haas-van Alphen effect of the stage-1 intercalated compound SbCl5 graphite consists of a dominant oscillation of frequency 1211 T and two weaker oscillations with frequencies 1110 and 1026 T. The cyclotron mass of the carrier with the dominant oscillation is 0.271 m0 where m0 is the free-electron mass. The dominant oscillation is explained by the linear combination of atomic orbitals calculation of Holzwarth (1980) with electron transfer from the graphite of 0.37 electrons per SbCl5 molecule. The amplitudes of the two smaller oscillations depend on the length of time that a sample is exposed to air. The frequencies are attributed to environment-related aging processes in the compound. Methods of preparation of pure, homogeneous and stable stage-1 samples are also described. Keywords
