Human Coccidiosis in South Carolina

Abstract
Four cases of Isospora belli infec-tion were detected in a school for mental defectives. These are the first indigenous cases known to occur in S. Carolina. A 5th case occurred in a technician, possibly accidentally acquired in the laboratory. Symptoms attributable to the Isospora infection in this case are described. Oocysts persisted in the stools of 3 of the institutionalized cases for 83, 115, and 120 days after their detection, and for 50 days in the laboratory technician. Experimental inoculation, with mature oocysts, of 2 monkeys, 2 dogs, 2 swine, 12 mice, 4 rats, a guinea pig, and a rabbit failed to produce discernible infections.
