Mammalian glycosidases. Distribution in the body

Abstract
Like [beta]-glucuronidase, 3 other glycosidases[long dash][alpha]-mannosidase, [beta]-galactosidase and [beta]-N-acetylglucosaminidase[long dash]have been found to be widely distributed throughout mammalian tissues. Tables of their distribution in the mouse and the rat are given. The adult epididymis in both the mouse and the rat is a particularly rich source of the enzymes. Infant epididymis values were much lower than adult ones. The low-glucuronidase C3H strain of mice showed no differences from other strains in its other glycosidase activities. The increase in B-glucuronidase activity of infant mouse liver compared with adult liver observed with all strains was greatly exaggerated in the C3H strain. All 4 enzymes can be differentiated by use of the appropriate selective inhibitors. In view of their similarity in distribution, a common function for this group of enzymes is suggested.
