Abstract
105 cases of surgical infections treated systemically with bacitracin are reported. Favorable responses were obtained in about 70%; of these, about 1/5 were classified as dramatic. Three cases of extensive bacterial synergistic gangrene responded within 72 hrs. and recovered" synergistic gangrene responded within 72 hrs. and recovered without surgical excision. Favorable results were obtained in 78% of the 3 largest groups "cellulitis," "deep abscess," and "infected accidental wound." Causative organisms were found to be resistant to the drug in most of the cases which failed to respond. The status of bacitracin is noted as to its toxicity, and to specifications required of manufacturers. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
