Psychodynamic Practice and Single System Design: The Odd Couple

Abstract
Single subject design, recommended as applicable with any theoretical or practice perspective, is most often associated with behavioral techniques and task-centered strategies. The course to be described demonstrates the successful utilization of this method with students trained in psychodynamic treatment approaches. Using cases drawn from their field experiences, the students found that the clear specification of goals and interventions and continuing visual documentation of progress allowed them to relinquish ineffective techniques and reinforced useful treatment strategies. Students enrolled in the course evaluated it as their best integrative learning experience and as having a profound impact on their practice.
