Abstract
Isolation of pure cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria from soil, etc., is facilitated by including 3% Na2SO3 7H2O in the medium to eliminate most contaminants in crude cultures. Iron, although essential for growth, is required in such small amts. as ordinarily to be present as a contaminant. Rapid growth free from FeS has been obtained in media containing mineral salts + lactate + yeast extract + ferrous ions below the saturation concn. for FeS. Hydrogen for autotro-phic growth was provided in vitro by immersing metallic iron in the medium. Keywords
