Abstract
Small IntestinePhysiology Regional absorption. Regional absorption has been discussed by Ingelfinger.77 Selective absorption occurs at various levels. Vitamin B12 and bile salts are absorbed primarily in the ileum. Calcium and iron absorption are maximal in the duodenum. The jejunum is prominent in the absorption of carbohydrates and proteins. Water and small solutes are also handled differently in various segments. The effect of distal ileac resection on gastric secretion has been studied by Reul and Ellison.78 Hypersecretion occurs with a marked proliferation of parietal cells; the hypersecretion can be blocked by atropine. Massive bowel resection. This operation . . .Keywords
