Abstract
The uptake of S35 in fractured and intact humeri of rats fed a control ration consisting of 50% ground Lathyrus odoratus seeds and 50% control ration was determined. The ratio F/I of radioactivity of fractured (F) to intact (I) bone was calculated. the sweet pea diet resulted in a significant decrease of F/I ratio as compared with normal control animals. Treatment of animals with the anabolic steroid 17-ethyl-19-nortestosterone caused a significant protective action against the inhibiting effect of sweet pea toxin. Apparently sweet pea intoxication inhibits and 17-ethyl-19-nortestosterone promotes those processes of bone repair associated with alteration of connective tissue mucopolysaccharides measurable by the S35 uptake method. Keywords
