Abstract
The optical absorption spectrum and magnetic properties of Nd2 Mg3 (NO3)12·24H2O have been interpreted in the light of crystalline field theory, using intermediate coupling calculations within each level of the free Nd3+ ion. A field of C3v symmetry has been used to account successfully for most of the observed crystal field energy levels and their Zeeman splittings. The possibility of using icosahedral symmetry as an approximation has also been investigated. Keywords
