p-Aminobenzoic Acid Synthesis by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae in Relation to Clinical and Cultural Sulfonamide Resistance

Abstract
Summary: With some exceptions, individuals promptly cured of gonorrhea by sulfonamide therapy yielded sulfonamide-sensitive gonococcus cultures with low PAB synthesis, while clinically resistant individuals yielded sulfonamide-resistant cultures with relatively high PAB synthesis. On the basis of this and other evidence presented, it is clear that increased PAB production by gonococci is usually associated with clinical resistance and resistance in vitro to sulfonamides, but is insufficient to account entirely for such resistance.
