Abstract
The literature reviewed is discussed in terms of: peripheral receptors and conductors, input to spinal cord, ascending pathway in cord and brain stem, thalamus and diencephalon, cortical input, efferent pathways, final common path, cerebral associative mechanisms, cerebral blood supply and cerebrospinal fluid circulation, cerebral metabolism, and innovations in physiological techniques. 317 references. Keywords
