A review of the energy expenditure of disabled locomotion with special reference to lower limb amputees

Abstract
This paper reviews selected studies of the energy cost of motor activities. In comparison with non-disabled subjects, the disabled incur additional energy costs for many activities, but there is evidence that this can be minimised by modifying external factors such as the design of clothing or orthoses and therapeutic strategies aimed at improving exercise performance efficiency.
