PROTEIN-BOUND IODINE OF SERUM IN INDUCED ABORTION AND AT DELIVERY

Abstract
Protein-bound iodine (PBI) was determined in 29 pregnant, euthyroid women. The mean value during the first trimester of pregnancy was considerably greater than that at the time of delivery 10.37 [plus or minus] 0.63 [mu]g% as compared with 8.18 [plus or minus] 0.23 ug%. The normal value was 6.12 [plus or minus] 0.17 [mu]g%. Following interruption of pregnancy as well as following delivery, PBI levels returned to normal in a few days. Labor itself had no influence. Determination of PBI in the cord of 19 newborn infants revealed levels within the normal range. In all cases, the cord levels were below the maternal levels by an average of 20%.
